History of Our Corps – May 27

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 27th day of May in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1813, Marines from the Lake Ontario squadron participate with an army regiment in a landing on the Canadian shore and the subsequent seizure of Fort George.

In 1944, MacArthur’s forces land on Biak Island off New Guinea and soon run into a tough fight for the island.

In 1945, the 6th Marine Division captures Naha, the capital city of Okinawa.

In 1951, VMF-214 and 323 begin using the K-46 dirt strip near the front lines as a forward base, rotating up to a dozen Corsairs there from the main K-1 base, as a means to cut down response time for close air support missions. 1st MAW also begins to use transport aircraft to drop flares at night in support of Marines on the ground.

In 1966, the 5th Marines headquarters arrives in Chu Lai.
