History of Our Corps – August 23

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 23rd day of August in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1798, the first Headquarters of the Marine Corps was established at Philadelphia.

In 1862, Brooklyn Navy Yard Marines quell a drunken riot among Army recruits in the city.

In 1945, Aircraft FMFPAC assigns MAG-31 on Okinawa as the air component of the Marine occupation force for Japan.

In 1951, the Communists break off the truce talks.

In 1958, the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island Band, and a ceremonial troop unit deploy to Scotland to participate in the annual Edinburgh Tattoo.

          The Marines return home on 13 September.
