History of Our Corps – December 27

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 27th day of December in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1814, the Carolina duels with British shore batteries and is eventually sunk.

In 1903, Major General George F. Elliot, 10th Commandant of the Marine Corps, departed Washington, DC, to command Marines in Panama.

In 1913, the Aviation Detachment of the Advance Base Force is established with two officers and seven enlisted men.

This is the first Marine air-ground team.

In 1940, the 10th Marines is reactivated as an artillery regiment at San Diego, to serve with the 2nd Marine Brigade.

In 1943, the Army’s 164th Infantry replaces the 9th Marines at Bougainville.

The regiment and the 3rd Parachute Battalion sail for Guadalcanal the next day.

AirSols conducts fighter sweeps over Rabaul this day and the next.

In 1972, the Commandant’s house and Marine Barracks 8th and I are placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2002, to simplify the future deployment of units to the Middle East, the Marine Corps orders all units serving in the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) in Japan and Okinawa to remain in place indefinitely.
