History of Our Corps – January 20

And on this the 7th through the 27th days of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1972, elements of the 2nd Marine Division and 2nd MAW joined naval forces of the Atlantic Fleet in cold weather landing operations at Reid State Park on the coast of Maine in Exercise Snowy Beach.

And on this the 11th day of January through the 29th day of March in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1971, during the period 11 January through 29 March 1971, Marines of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) and the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines (1/11) participated in OPERATION UPSHUR STREAM, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on the 13th of January through the 9th of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 13 January through 9 February 1969, Marines of HMM-362, SLF-A, ARVN 2nd Division, the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26), and HMM-164 participated in OPERATION BOLD MARINER, a part of OPERATION GAME WARDEN, a cordon, search, and sweep operation in the Batangan Peninsula, Quang Ngai Province.

          This was the largest amphibious assault of the war.

And on the 15th of January through the 20th of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 15 through 20 January 1969, the 198th Infantry Brigade, the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines (3/26) and ARVN units participated in OPERATION RUSSEL BEACH, a joint operation to remove Vietnamese refugees from the area before pushing forward to root out VC troops and fortifications in the Batangan Peninsula, Quang Tin Province.

And on these the 19th through the 23rd days of January 1970 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1970, the Okinawa Military Employees Labor Union’s five-day strike is held without a major confrontation.

          It does not seriously affect the continuation of essential Marine Corps activities.

And on this the 20th through the 22nd days of January 1967 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 20 through 22 January 1967, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-32 and OPERATION COUNTY FAIR, security operations in the Quang Nam Province.

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 20th day of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1902, Major Littleton W.T. Waller executes 11 Filipinos for alleged treachery associated with his failed expedition.

In 1918, the 1st Machine Gun Battalionis redesignated the 6th Machine Gun Battalion.

In 1942, Thomas Holcomb becomes the first Lieutenant General in Marine Corps history.

In 1943, the 6th Marines and the 2nd Marine Division artillery are joined with Army elements to form the CAM (Composite Army-Marine) Division.

          This organization participates in attacks designed to destroy the remaining enemy forces in western Guadalcanal.

          The operation continues through 8 February, when American forces reach Tassafaronga Point.

MAG-24 departs California for EWA Field.

In 1945, Marine Lieutenant William McGill from the Essex shoots down three Japanese aircraft as the U.S. fleet exits the South China Sea.

In 1960, BLT 1/5 participates in SNOWFLEX II-60 at the cold weather training Center, Bridgeport, California.

          This exercise lasts until 11 February.

In 1961, elements of the Solant Amity task force assist in famine relief work at Matad, Congo, unloading supplies by helicopter from the Hermitage (LSD-34).

400 Marines from Camp Pendleton help fight brush fires in Orange County, California.

In 1962, CINCPAC authorizes MAAG advisors to accompany their Vietnamese units into combat.

          Soon after, President Kennedy authorizes the advisors to return fire if fired upon.

In 1966, President Johnson requests additional funds from Congress to add a fourth active-duty division to the Corps.

In 1967, during the period 20 through 22 January, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-32 and OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 14, security operations in the Quang Nam Province.

In 1968, Khe Sanh

          Company I, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines (3/26) kills an estimated 100 NVA and loses seven killed and 35 wounded in an attempt to clear Hill 881 North.

          The company is withdrawn after an NVA lieutenant comes into the main perimeter and reveals plans for a major assault beginning in the next few days.

In 1971, The Navy announces it will reduce the number of new amphibious assault ships of the LHA class from nine to five.

In 1981, the 52 American hostages held by Iran for 444 days are freed.

In 1991, I MEF begins conducting artillery raids against Iraqi forces in Kuwait.
