History of Our Corps – January 30

And on the 13th of January through the 9th of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 13 January through 9 February 1969, Marines of HMM-362, SLF-A, ARVN 2nd Division, the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26), and HMM-164 participated in OPERATION BOLD MARINER, a part of OPERATION GAME WARDEN, a cordon, search, and sweep operation in the Batangan Peninsula, Quang Ngai Province.

          This was the largest amphibious assault of the war.

And during the period 21 January through 16 February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 January through 16 February, 1968, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) and the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3) participated in OPERATION OSCEOLA, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Tri Province.

And on the 22nd of January through the 18th of March in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 22 January through 18 March, 1969, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9), the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9), the  2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4), 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (3/4), the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9), and the ARVN 2nd Regiment participated in OPERATION DEWEY CANYON, an offensive against PAVN communication lines in Laos, north of the A Shau Valley in the Thua Thien Province

And on this the 25th of January through the 7th of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 25 January through 7 February, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines2nd Battalion, 1st Marines and the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines participated in OPERATION LAFAYETTE, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And during the period 26 January through 29 February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 26 January through 29 February, Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines and the 1st Amphibian Tractor Battalion participated in OPERATION SALINE, a search and clear operation to keep the Cua River supply line open.

            OPERATION SALINE was combined with OPERATION NAPOLEAN on 28 Feb 1968.

And on this the 27th of January through the 7th of April in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 27 January through 7 April, the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines participated in OPERATION DESOTO, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Ngai Province.

And on the 27th of January through the 7th of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 27 January through 7 February, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines and the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines participated in OPERATION LINN RIVER a clear and search operation in Quang Nam Province.

During the period 28 January through 17 of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1966, during the period 28 January through 17 February, the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, and the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines participated in OPERATION DOUBLE EAGLE linking in with Operation Masher/White WingOperation Lien Ket 22 and Operation Thang Phuong II in the Quang Ngai and Quang Tri Provinces.

And on this the 29th of January through the 1st of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 29 January through 1 February, the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-30, a security operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on this the 30th of January through the 1st of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 30 January through 1 February, the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines participated in OPERATION TRINITY, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Ngai Province.

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 30th and penultimate day of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1848, Marine and sailors from the Dale make a night landing and overland approach followed by a dawn attack to defeat a Mexican force a Cochori, near Guaymas.

In 1891. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Heywood is appointed to serve as the ninth Commandant of the Marine Corps.

In 1943, Marines participated in the Battle for Rennell Island.

In 1944, Lieutenant Hanson shoots down four Japanese planes, giving him a total of 25 kills, 20 of them in the course of six missions over the past 13 days.

          He dies on a mission on 3 February, but eventually he receives the Medal of Honor for his incredible run of victories.

          His tally remains the highest of any Marine Corsair pilot during the war.

The Gilbert Group is formed under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Puller. Composed of elements of all three regiments of the 1st Marine Division, it is tasked with clearing all enemy forces in the interior of western New Britain.

          The group continues operations until 18 February.

The 1st Parachute Regiment headquarters and the 3rd Parachute Battalion sail from Guadalcanal for San Diego.

Total AirSols sorties over Rabaul for the month are 873 by light bombers and 1,850 by fighters.

          They claim 503 enemy aircraft destroyed, at a cost of 65 planes lost.

In 1957,.Company H of 3/6 flies to Fort Lyautey in Morocco to replace Company E, 2/2.

In 1959, the Boxer is reclassified as LPH-4

In 1960,. the 8th Provisional Marine Brigade conducts amphibious exercises at Vieques to test new heliborne amphibious assault techniques and modifications to the Boxer.

          The operation lasts through 19 February.

In 1967, during the period 30 January through 1 February, the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines (1/7) participated in OPERATION TRINITY, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Ngai Province.

In 1968,. Communist forces launch the Tet offensive that spreads throughout South Vietnam by the next day.

          Attacks come against most major cities and province capitals.

          By infiltration and assault, they take control of most of Hue, the former imperial capital.

          An attempt to seize the U.S. Embassy in Saigon is thwarted by the Marine Guards.

          Facilities at Da Nang are hit by rockets, mortars, and a ground assault.

In 1971,.South Vietnamese and U.S. Army forces begin OPERATION LAM SON 719 in Quang Tri Province.

In 1973,.MAG-12 departs Bien Hoa for Iwakuni, Japan.
