History of Our Corps – August 27

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 27th day of August in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1780, Marines guarding workmen cutting masts for the Navy pursued Indians near Reading, Pennsylvania.

In 1790, Major Samuel Nicholas, the senior Marine to serve during the Revolutionary War and considered the first Commandant of the Corps, dies in Philadelphia.

In 1893, personnel of the Marine Barracks, Port Royal, South Carolina, assist in rescue operations following a tidal wave.

In 1926, Marines, this time from the Galveston, again occupy Bluefields to keep it out of the hands of both Nicaraguan factions.

In 1942, landing craft place the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines (1/5) ashore near Kokumbona, leading to two days of inconclusive fighting with Japanese forces near the Matanikau River.

In 1943, the 2nd Marine Airdrome Battalion and Seabee units occupy Nukufetau Atoll in the Ellice Islands to build an airfield in support of future operations in the Gilbert Islands.

In 1945, the forward echelon of VMB-611 departs the Philippines for Peleliu to join 4th MAW there.

In 1947, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) departs Tienstin for Camp Pendleton.

          The only Marine outpost in China is now FMFWESPAC, located at Tsingtao.

In 1950, a dozen Marines arrive in Saigon to guard the U.S. Embassy.

          Representative Carl Vinson, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, announces that he believes the Corps should have four divisions and 26 squadrons.

In 1951, the 1st Marine Division begins moving back into the lines southeast of the Punchbowl.

In 1966, during the period 26 August through 6 September, the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines (3/5) and the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines (3/7) and the ARVN 4th Regiment participated in OPERATION JACKSON/OPERATION LIEN KET 54, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Ngai Province

In 1967, during the period 27 August through 5 September, the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines (1/7) and the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines (3/11) participated in OPERATION YAZOO, a search and destroy operation in Happy Valley, in the Quang Nam Province

          during the period 27 August through 6 September 1967, the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines (2/3), participated in OPERATION BELT DRIVE, a search and destroy operation along the Nhung River south of Quang Tri.

In 1970, the 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company is deactivated.
