In 1944, the 7th Marines and 3/5 seize Aogiri Ridge to expand the Cape Gloucester perimeter.

During the period 6th through 15th January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 6 through 15 January 1967, a Marine SLF (1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) and the 3rd and 4th Battalions of Vietnamese Marines supported by HMM-362 from the USS Iwo Jima, participated in OPERATION DECKHOUSE V/OPERATION SONG THAN, a search and destroy operation in the Kien Hoa Province.

During the period 7 through 17 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1902, during the period 7 through 17 January 1902, Waller, with fresh Marines, searches in vain for the remainder of his force.

In 1972, elements of the 2nd Marine Division and 2nd MAW joined naval forces of the Atlantic Fleet in cold weather landing operations at Reid State Park on the coast of Maine in Exercise Snowy Beach.

During the period 9 through 12 January 1967 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 9 through 12 January 1967, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-29, a security operation in the Quang Nam Province.

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 10th day of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1778, a company of Marines under the command of Navy Captain James Willing depart Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh) in the armed boat Rattletrap for an expedition to New Orleans.

In 1847, Stockton retakes Los Angeles without fighting.

In 1861, Captain Josiah Watson and 38 Marines surrenders the Pensacola Navy Yard to armed Floridians during the Civil War.

In 1863, the Marine detachment of the Wachusett ejects a Mexican force from the Confederate steamer Virginia and takes control of the ship as it lays at anchor in the harbor of Mugeres, Mexico.

In 1924, the 10th Marines begin exercises in Culebra, Puerto Rico, involving the defense of an advanced naval and air base.

In 1927, the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment arrives in Bluefields from Cuba.

          Later in the month, most of the unit shifts by sea to Managua.

In 1944, the 26th and 27th Marines (infantry) and 13th Marines (artillery) are organized at Camp Pendleton for duty with the soon-to-be-created 5th Marine Division.

In 1945, Advance parties of MAG-24 and 32 go ashore at Lingayen.

In 1946, General George Marshall (former Army chief of staff and now the U.S. special envoy to China) mediates a cease fire agreement between the Chinese Nationalists a nd Communists.

          It is to take effect at midnight on 13 January.

          Imitating the widespread unrest in the Army over the pace of demobilization, a group of Marine NCOs in Hawaii present a petition to General Geiger (commanding General of FMFPAC) calling for a speedier return to civilian life.

          Geiger demotes all of them to private on the spot.

          There are no recurrences of unrest anywhere in the Corps.

In 1951, the 1st Marine Division begins a movement north from the Bean Patch to the vicinity of Pohang, a port on the east coast of South Korea.

          A major airlift, much of it provided by VMR-152 and 352, brings over a thousand replacements for the division from the States to Korea.

In 1959, the Marine Corps acquires Vincent Air Force Base in Yuma, Arizona, and activates it as an auxiliary airfield for El Toro.

In 1991, the U.S. Army’s 1st Brigade of the 2nd Armored Division (known as the Tiger Brigade) is attached to I MEF.
