History of Our Corps – January 21

And on this the 7th through the 27th days of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1972, elements of the 2nd Marine Division and 2nd MAW joined naval forces of the Atlantic Fleet in cold weather landing operations at Reid State Park on the coast of Maine in Exercise Snowy Beach.

And on this the 11th day of January through the 29th day of March in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1971, during the period 11 January through 29 March 1971, Marines of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) and the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines (1/11) participated in OPERATION UPSHUR STREAM, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on the 13th of January through the 9th of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 13 January through 9 February 1969, Marines of HMM-362, SLF-A, ARVN 2nd Division, the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26), and HMM-164 participated in OPERATION BOLD MARINER, a part of OPERATION GAME WARDEN, a cordon, search, and sweep operation in the Batangan Peninsula, Quang Ngai Province.

          This was the largest amphibious assault of the war.

And on these the 19th through the 23rd days of January 1970 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1970, the Okinawa Military Employees Labor Union’s five-day strike is held without a major confrontation.

          It does not seriously affect the continuation of essential Marine Corps activities.

And on this the 20th through the 22nd days of January 1967 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 20 through 22 January 1967, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-32 and OPERATION COUNTY FAIR, security operations in the Quang Nam Province.

And during the period 21 January through 24 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 through 24 January 1968, Marines of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4) and the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) participated in OPERATION NEOSHO, a clearing operation to provide cover for the 1st Calvary Division’s arrival at Camp Evans, 24 Km northwest of Hue.

And during the period 21 January through 16 February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 January through 16 February, 1968, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) and the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3) participated in OPERATION OSCEOLA, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Tri Province.

And during the period 21 January through 23 November in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 January through 23 November, 1968, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1), the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3), 1st Battalion, 4th Marines (1/4), the  2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4), 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (3/4), the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9), the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9) and the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26) participated in OPERATION LANCASTER II, a search and clear operation to safeguard Route 9 between Cam Lo and Cam Lu.

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 21st day of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1918, the 1st Marine Aeronautic Company arrives at the naval base at Ponta Delgado, Azores, and undertakes antisubmarine patrols with its 12 seaplanes and six flying boats.

In 1944, the 5th Marine Division is officially activated at Camp Pendleton.

In 1949, VMF-211 departs China.

          The fighter squadron transfers to the carrier Rendova (CVE-114) and remains in the western Pacific.

In 1951, the 1st Korean Marine Corps (KMC) Regiment is attached to the 1st Marine Division.

In 1954, 27 Marines and two corpsmen of the 4th Marines drown when their landing craft is struck by a ship and sinks in icy waters off Inchon, Korea.

In 1958, When mob violence erupts in Caracas during the overthrow of dictator Perez Jimenez, a provisional company of Marine Barracks Guantanamo embarks on the Des Moines (CA-134) and deploys off the coast to protect American interests.

          It remains offshore for a week.

In 1960, helicopters from MAG-26 are instrumental in recovering the nose cone of the fourth Project Mercury space shot, from Wallops Island, Virginia.

In 1968, during the period 21 through 24 January, Marines of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4) and the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) participated in OPERATION NEOSHO, a clearing operation to provide cover for the 1st Cavalry Division’s arrival at Camp Evans, 24 Km northwest of Hue.

          During the period 21 January through 16 February, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines and 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines participated in OPERATION OSCEOLA, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Tri Province.

          General Westmoreland orders a temporary halt to work on the McNamara Line, the strongpoint barrier system along the DMZ.

          During the period 21 through 23 November, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1), 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3), 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines (3/3), 1st Battalion, 4th Marines (1/4), 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4), 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (3/4), 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9), 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9), and the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26) participated in OPERATION LANCASTER II, a search and clear operation to safeguard Route 9 between Cam Lo and Ca Lu.

          At Khe Sanh, Company K, 3/26 defeats a Communist night attack on Hill 861.

          The NVA begins a bombardment of the combat base just before dawn.

          The Marines will receive incoming shells and rockets every day for the next 77 days.

          One shell sets off the main ammunition dump, raining exploding ordnance over much of the perimeter.

In 2003,.during Operation Iraqi Freedom the remaining elements of the I MEF and some reinforcing elements of II MEF begin flowing into Kuwait by air to marry up with material from the MPF squadrons.
