History of Our Corps – January 22

And on this the 7th through the 27th days of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1972, elements of the 2nd Marine Division and 2nd MAW joined naval forces of the Atlantic Fleet in cold weather landing operations at Reid State Park on the coast of Maine in Exercise Snowy Beach.

And on this the 11th day of January through the 29th day of March in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1971, during the period 11 January through 29 March 1971, Marines of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) and the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines (1/11) participated in OPERATION UPSHUR STREAM, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on the 13th of January through the 9th of February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 13 January through 9 February 1969, Marines of HMM-362, SLF-A, ARVN 2nd Division, the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26), and HMM-164 participated in OPERATION BOLD MARINER, a part of OPERATION GAME WARDEN, a cordon, search, and sweep operation in the Batangan Peninsula, Quang Ngai Province.

          This was the largest amphibious assault of the war.

And on these the 19th through the 23rd days of January 1970 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1970, the Okinawa Military Employees Labor Union’s five-day strike is held without a major confrontation.

          It does not seriously affect the continuation of essential Marine Corps activities.

And on this the 20th through the 22nd days of January 1967 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 20 through 22 January 1967, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-32 and OPERATION COUNTY FAIR, security operations in the Quang Nam Province.

And during the period 21 January through 24 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 through 24 January 1968, Marines of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4) and the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) participated in OPERATION NEOSHO, a clearing operation to provide cover for the 1st Calvary Division’s arrival at Camp Evans, 24 Km northwest of Hue.

And during the period 21 January through 16 February in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 January through 16 February, 1968, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) and the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3) participated in OPERATION OSCEOLA, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Tri Province.

And during the period 21 January through 23 November in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1968, during the period 21 January through 23 November, 1968, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1), the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3), 1st Battalion, 4th Marines (1/4), the  2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4), 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (3/4), the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9), the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9) and the 2nd Battalion, 26th Marines (2/26) participated in OPERATION LANCASTER II, a search and clear operation to safeguard Route 9 between Cam Lo and Cam Lu.

And on the 22nd of January through the 18th of March in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1969, during the period 22 January through 18 March, 1969, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9), the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9), the  2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4), 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (3/4), the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9), and the ARVN 2nd Regiment participated in OPERATION DEWEY CANYON, an offensive against PAVN communication lines in Laos, north of the A Shau Valley in the Thua Thien Province

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 22nd day of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1836, Marines from the Constellation and the sloop St. Louis reinforce Fort Brooke, Florida, against an expected Seminole attack.

In 1848, the Marines in the San Jose mission are besieged by Mexican soldiers, but hold on until relieved by naval forces on 15 February.

In 1925, the 2nd Expeditionary Force is organized at Cavite, Philippine, Islands.

Three ships deliver the 140 Marines from the Philippines to reinforce those already at Shanghai protecting American lives.

          The Marines remain until February.

In 1928, the Eastern Area is established to cover the sparsely inhabited eastern two-thirds of Nicaragua.

          Its forces come in the following weeks from the Marine detachments of the Special Service Squadron.

In 1944, the 1st Marine Division begins aggressive patrolling of western New Britain.

U.S. and British Army forces make an amphibious assault at Anzio to outflank strong German defenses south of Rome.

          They fail to exploit an initial advantage and become trapped against the coast by enemy counterattacks.

In 1946, Commandant Vandegrift orders the organization of a special infantry brigade at Quantico to stand in readiness for possible expeditionary service in troubled parts of the Caribbean.

In 1951, VMF(N)-513 begins operating from K-9 in place of grounded VMF-311.

          China makes its own peace offer, which is rejected by the United States.

In 1968, the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) arrives at Khe Sanh to reinforce the 26th Marines

In 1969, during the period 22 January through 18 March, Marines of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines (2/9), 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9), 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines (2/3), and the ARVN 2nd Regiment participated in OPERATION DEWEY CANYON, an offensive against PAVIN Communication lines in Laos, north of the A Shau Valley in Thua Thien Province.

In 2003, four Marine Corps aviators of HMLA-775 die when their two AH-1W Cobra helicopters collide during night operations in Texas in support of Joint Task Force 6, which provides military assistance to counter-drug efforts along the southern border.
