History of Our Corps – January 7

And on this the period 3 through 8 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1966, during the period 3 through 8 January 1966, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (1/1) participated in OPERATION LONG LANCE, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on this the 4th through the 9th days of January 1967 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 4 through 9 January 1967, the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines (2/5) participated in OPERATION LINCOLN (I CORPS), a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on this the 5th through the 8th days of January 1967 in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, During the period 5 through 9 January 1967, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines (2/1) participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-25, a security operation in the Quang Nam Province.

And on this the 5th through the 9th days of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1927, Marines and sailors from the Special Service Squadron land at several points on the Nicaraguan coast to safeguard U.S. interests.

          The Galveston’s Marines move inland to protect the U.S. Legation in Managua.

During the period 6 through 8 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1928, Lieutenant Christian F. Schilt makes 10 flights in an O2U Corsair into a dangerous makeshift airstrip in Quilali to bring in a new commander and supplies and bring out the patrol’s most seriously wounded.

          The two patrols have a combined 31 wounded and are surrounded by rebels.

And on this the 6th – the 11th days of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1944, the 7th Marines and 3/5 seize Aogiri Ridge to expand the Cape Gloucester perimeter.

During the period 6 through 15 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 6 through 15 January 1967, a Marine SLF (1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) and the 3rd and 4th Battalions of Vietnamese Marines supported by HMM-362 from the USS Iwo Jima, participated in OPERATION DECKHOUSE V/OPERATION SONG THAN, a search and destroy operation in the Kien Hoa Province.

And during the period 7 January through 9 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1967, during the period 7 through 9 January 1967, the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1), participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-28 a security operation in the Quang Nam Province.

During the period 7 through 17 January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1902, during the period 7 through 17 January 1902, Waller, with fresh Marines, searches in vain for the remainder of his force.

And on this the 7th through the 27th days of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1972, elements of the 2nd Marine Division and 2nd MAW joined naval forces of the Atlantic Fleet in cold weather landing operations at Reid State Park on the coast of Maine in Exercise Snowy Beach.

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 7th day of January in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1859, Lieutenant Colonel John Harris is appointed to serve as the Colonel Commandant of the Corps. He already had served 45 years as a Marine Officer before becoming the sixth Commandant.

In 1944, Marine and Navy dive bombers and torpedo bombers from New Georgia, supported by fighters from Bougainville, stage a large raid against Rabaul.

          A similar attack is repeated two days later.

In 1948, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz announces that the presence of the 2nd Marines with the Sixth Fleet will serve as a warning to Yugoslavia not to menace the 5,000 U.S. troops in the Free Territory of Trieste

In 1951, the three carriers hosting Marine squadrons withdraw from Korean waters.

          VMF-212and the Bataan return within a week, but VMF-214, 323, and 311 end up at Atami, mainly due to the lack of good airfields in the remaining territory under U.N. control.

HMR-161 successfully completes Operation Mule train, during which it provides all supplies required for a frontline battalion for a week.

          The 3rd Marine Brigade is redesignated the 3rd Marine Division.

          It’s regiments will be the 3rd, 4th, 9th, and 12th Marines (the latter an artillery outfit).

          Only the 3rd Marines is fully formed as of this date.

In 1953, 2/8 sails from Morehead City to become the landing force of the Sixth Fleet.

          It will remain afloat until 20 May.

In 1957, the report of the Hogaboom Board is accepted by Commandant Pate.

          Its main recommendations are to add a fourth rifle company to the infantry battalion shift the tank battalion from the division to Force Troops, and add an antitank battalion of 45 Ontos vehicles (small tracked vehicles mounting six 105 mm recoilless rifles) to the division.

          ThM-series table of organization, designed to enhance the helicopter transportability of the division, is fully implemented by fall of 1958.

In 1961, MAG-12 moved from Iwakuni to the Philippines.

In 1967, during the period 7 through 9 January 1967, the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1), participated in OPERATION COUNTY FAIR 1-28 a security operation in the Quang Nam Province.

In 1969, The Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded to 1stMarDiv Chaplain, Lt. V.R. Capodanno, U.S. Navy, who was killed in action in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam on 4 Sept. 1967.

In 1983, VMFA-314 becomes the first naval squadron to operate the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, which will eventually replace the F-4 and A-4 in the Corps.

In 1989, HMA-775 is activated as part of the 4th MAW at Camp Pendleton.
