History of Our Corps – July 17

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 17th day of July in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1862, Marines and sailors from the Potomac land at Pascagoula, Mississippi, and destroy the telegraph.

          Back aboard a launch, they skirmish with Confederate troops ashore.

In 1943, AirSols executes a 192-plane strike against shipping concentrated at the southern end of Bougainville Island.

          Marine fighters claim 41 of the 52 enemy planes shot down.

          Marine dive bombers assist in hitting four destroyers.

          On New Georgia, elements of the 9th Defense Battalion repulse a Japanese night attack against the American beachhead supporting the drive on Munda Airfield.

In 1953, A Marine C-119 transport plane crashes near Milton, Florida, claiming the lives of four crewmen and 38 NROTC midshipmen.

In 1961, the Marine Corps School’s standby infantry unit, the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines (2/8) is redesignated the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Marines (2/22).

In 1964, Marine Advisory Team One fends off a Communist assault on its perimeter atop Tiger Tooth Mountain.

In 1967, during the period 17 through 25 July, the 1st Battalion, 13th Marines (1/13) participated in OPERATION BEACON TORCH, a series of amphibious search and destroy operations in the Quang Nam and Quang Tri Provinces

          during the period 17 through 25 July, the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines (2/3) and the 1st and 3rd Battalions, 26th Marines (1/26 & 3/26) participated in OPERATION ARDMORE, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Tri Province.

In 1990, 200 members of the Marine Barracks, Subic Bay, Philippines, helped rescue survivors in Cabanatuan after the island was hit by an earthquake
