History of Our Corps – June 28

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 28th day of June in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1814, Marines play a conspicuous role in the sloop Wasp’s victory over the British warship Reindeer, repelling an attempt to board and then sweeping the enemy decks with musket fire as American sailors counterattacked onto the British ship.

In 1918, the Brooklyn lands a detachment of Marines at Vladivostok, Russia, to protect the U.S. consulate and assist other Allied units in taking control of the city from Communist forces.

In 1950, the NKPA captures Seoul.

In 1964, VMFA-531 arrives for duty in the Far East after flying from its home station of Cherry Point, with stops at El Toro, Hawaii, and Wake Island, and aerial refueling across the rest of the Pacific.

In 1972, South Vietnamese forces begin a counter offensive to drive back the NVA in the former I Corps Zone.

In 1983, Sergeant Major Robert E. Cleary succeeds Sergeant Major Crawford and becomes the 10th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

In 1991, Sergeant Major Harold G. Overstreet succeeds Sergeant Major Sommers and becomes the 12th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.
