In 1942, Five brothers were lost at sea when the USS Juneau, a light cruiser, (CL-52) was sunk off the coast of Savo Island near Guadalcanal. They were the Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa. This tragedy is the reason why no family members are allowed to serve in combat together.
In 1943, on the 13th and 14th of November, in the Battle of Coconut Grove, 2/21 defeats a Japanese force and gains control of an important trail junction on the eastern side of the Bougainville perimeter.
VMF(N)-531 makes its first successful night intercept and shoots down a Japanese Betty bomber near Bougainville.
In 1944, the final elements of the 1st Marine Division, mainly amphibious tractors, depart Peleliu for Pavuvu.
In 1945, VMF-215 and VMTB-332 are deactivated.
In 1962, 400 of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines fly from Hawaii to Guam to assist with typhoon damage.
In 1967, during the period 13 November through 29 November, Marines of the 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines participated in OPERATION BADGER HUNT, a search and destroy operation in the Dai Loc District of Quang Nam Province.
during the period 13 November through 30 November, Marines of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines and the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines participated in OPERATION FOSTER, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Nam Province.
In 1968, Marines of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines participated in Operation Daring Endeavor, a search and destroy mission 17 miles southeast of Da Nang.
In 1970, HMM-265 is deactivated at El Toro.
