History of Our Corps – November 9

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 9th day of November in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1822, Marines participate in the fight between the schooner Alligator and several pirate schooners in the harbor of Matanzas, Cuba.

In 1915, Most of the 4th Regiment deploys at sea off the west coast of Mexico.

In 1925, Marines from the Asiatic Fleet go ashore at Tientsin.

In 1942, the 6th Barrage Balloon Squadron is formed at New River.

In 1943, Major General Roy S. Geiger assumes command of I MAC and the Bougainville campaign in place of Lieutenant General Vandergrift.

          David M. Shoup is promoted to Colonel and assigned as C.O. of the 2nd Marines.

In 1945, 1/29 takes up station in Peitaiho.

          VMTB-132 and VMF-351 are deactivated.

In 1950, the Marine detachments of the Columbus (CA-74) and the Furse (DD-882) participate in the funeral of King Gustav V in Sweden.

In 1968, Marine Major Walter Cunningham received Apollo 7 astronaut wings.

In 1973, the Department of Defense implements strict energy conservation measures in response to shortages from the Arab oil embargo.

In 1982, the Commandant announces the fielding of the M16A2 rifle, a vastly improved version of the original M16 design.

          Following a two-day exercise in northern Somalia, the 31st MAU participates in Exercise Jade Tiger 83, a four-day operation with Omani forces at Wahibah Sands, Oman.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall begins to crumble.
