Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 28th day of October in the history of our beloved Corps:
Happy 359th Anniversary to the Royal Marines!!
The Corps of Royal Marines (RM) is an amphibious light infantry and also one of the five fighting arms of the Her Majesty’s Naval Service.
The marines can trace their origins back to the formation of the English Army’s “Duke of York and Albany’s maritime regiment of Foot” at the grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company on 28 October 1664.
In 1855, continuing the Viti Levu punitive campaign, an American force burns two more villages.
In 1899, Company A of the Sixth Marine Battalion arrives at Manila.
In 1942, I Marine Amphibious Corps (I MAC) arrives at Noumea, New Caledonia.
It is initially purely an administrative command to control Marine units in rear areas of the South Pacific command.
In 1943, the 2nd Battalion, 1stMarine Parachute Regiment makes an unopposed night landing from destroyer transports on the northwest coast of Choiseul to divert enemy attention from the pending assault on Bougainville.
In 1950, 3/1 moves 30 miles west of Wonsan to occupy the town of Majon-ni.
ROK forces engage Chinese Communist forces (CCF in American parlance of the time) at Suding and capture 16 prisoners.
In 1965, Viet Cong attacks at Chu Lai and Marble Mountain (near Da Nang) result in a few sappers getting into the airbases and the destruction of two jets and 19 helicopters.
In 1969, HMM-561 is deactivated at El Toro.
