History of Our Corps – September 28

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 28th day of September in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1906, a detachment of 31 Marines lands at Havana guard the Cuban treasury.

In 1918, while flying with a British squadron, Lieutenant Everett S. Brewster and Gunnery Sergeant Harry B. Wersheimer become the first Marines to shoot down an enemy plane.

In 1944, 3/5 conducts a shore-to-shore amphibious assault from northern Peleliu to seize Ngesebus Island off the coast.

In 1952, while on exchange duty with an Air Force squadron, Marine Major Alexander J. Gillis shoots down two MIGs before he himself goes down in the Yellow sea.

He is rescued within a few hours.

In 1966, during the 28th and 29th of September, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines (1/5) and the 2nd Battalion,5th Marines (2/5) participated in OPERATION MONTEREY, a search and destroy operation in the Quang Tin Province.

In 1984, HMM-364 is reactivated at Kaneohe Bay after a hiatus of 13 years.
