History of Our Corps – September 9

Good morning Leathernecks, and on this the 9th day of September in the history of our beloved Corps:

In 1923, a Marine detachment establishes a model camp at the Brazilian Exposition in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1924, the cruiser Huron (CA-9) lands her Marines to reinforce the Peking Legation Guard during factional fighting in north China.

In 1943, the U.S. Fifth Army makes an amphibious landing at Salerno in southern Italy.

In 1944, MBDAG-45 departs California for Ulithi, where it will provide air protection to the fleet anchorage.

In 1948, Kim IL-sung, a former member of the Soviet Army during World War II, proclaims the establishment of the Communist People’s Democratic Republic in North Korea.

In 1949, Montford Point Camp is deactivated at Camp Lejeune and Black Marines located there are transferred to other units on the base.

          At roughly the same time, black recruits are integrated into regular training platoons at Parris Island.

In 1950, Captain L. E. Brown flew the first Marine combat jet mission flown against the enemy in Korea.

In 1988, VMGR-452 is activated as part of the 4th MAW at Camp Pendleton.
