In 1776, Major Samuel Nicholas and three companies of Marines are dispatched from Philadelphia to reinforce Washington’s army as it retreats from New York through New Jersey.
In 1918, the Marine Corps resumes reliance on voluntary enlistments for manpower.
In 1942, Carlson’s Raiders neared the end of an epic 26-day patrol on Guadalcanal.
Making use of lightweight search radars, the Marine Corps creates the first air-transportable air warning squadron, AWS(AT)-5, at Cherry Point.
VMO-3 is organized at Quantico.
In 1944, the first Women’s Reservists report for duty in Hawaii following authorization for them to serve outside the continental limits of the United States.
In 1950, prior to dawn, the rear-guard Marines at Yudam-ni defeat CCF attacks against the perimeter.
The 1st Battalion, 7th Marines (1/7) links up with Fox Company, which has lost more than half its men killed and wounded during nightly attacks by the Chinese.
In 1955, Marine firefighters from Camp Lejeune and Camp Geiger assist the Jacksonville, North Carolina, fire department in putting out a major fire in the downtown section of the city.
In 1958, the 2nd Infantry Training Regiment deploys 650 Marines to assist in fighting a forest fire near Malibu, California.
